Shopify stopped tracking website visitors correctly after Stape instal

Hello everyone,

I am having an issue after installing Stape on my Shopify store, and I would really appreciate any help.

I started using the Stape app on March 25 in order to improve my website’s tracking setup. The installation was done together with a professional who works with Stape implementations.

Since the installation, Shopify’s visitor/session reporting appears to have stopped working properly.

Before Stape, my store would normally show around 500 visits per day inside Shopify. However, on March 26, right after the installation, Shopify reported only around 20 visits. The important point is that the traffic did not actually stop. My store continued receiving visitors, and sales continued happening normally. The issue is that Shopify no longer seems able to detect or report the traffic correctly.

I contacted Shopify Support, and they told me the issue may be related to Stape, so they suggested that I contact you.

A few additional details:

  • The developer who installed Stape for me said he has other Shopify clients using similar setups, and their metrics are showing normally. He said I am the only case he has seen with this issue.
  • Tracking through Google Tag Manager appears to be working perfectly.
  • Events are being identified correctly in GTM.
  • The problem seems to be specifically with the data that Shopify is receiving or able to see regarding visitors/sessions.

Has anyone seen this happen before?

I would like to understand whether this could be related to:

  • Stape app settings
  • custom pixel configuration
  • customer privacy / consent settings
  • modified GTM loader
  • any conflict with Shopify’s native analytics/session tracking

If anyone has experienced this or knows what I should check first, I would be very grateful.

Thank you.

The most common issue is that the consent settings are not configured correctly. This has nothing to do with Stape. It’s just that consent settings often change when you switch tracking providers.

Usually, the problem is that your Consent banner isn’t passing the consent status to Shopify. As a result, Shopify doesn’t receive permission to collect data for its analytics. This is worth checking, and in 99% of cases, this is exactly where the problem lies.

If you’re not sure where the issue lies, you can disable the consent banner for a short while to see if that helps; if it does, then the problem is definitely with the consent banner. If you’re using a free or very cheap consent banner, the problem may lie with it.
