do I have to update old scripts of containers, when this option was not available?
It depends on how long ago you updated the custom loader. If you have a version where your GTM ID is still visible in open format - then you need to update. If it is encrypted - then no, you don’t need to update.
Either way you can update if you are not sure.
does switching on change anything in the snippet or is this only applied to the abcdefg.js? (and is switching on and off in the stape GUI enough to turn the feature on and off?)
Nothing changes in the GTM snippet. It starts working automatically if you use the current version of custom loader.
How can I verify if it is working
Check network requests. Your GA4 requests instead of using the /collect pattern that adblockers use to block them should look something like this:
